A Year In Review: 2015

So, I just re-read my ‘Goals post’ for the start of this year, what an eye opener… if you want to read that post in full, you can find it here.

I chose three main categories to focus on this year: Upgrade, Organise and Share. Just looking back on that it seems incredibly vague…

The first category UPGRADE: I specifically mentioned new trainers here. I did that, so that is one job off the list. We did buy some new bookshelves this year, but I wasn’t replacing any old ones, we are just short of shelves / have too many books.

Next we had ORGANISE: I still leave things to the last minute, that hasn’t changed. Although I have been keeping on top of things like groceries and appointments and the like. I bought a different box for my Postcrossing cards to live in, it’s prettier than the last box they were housed in. My cloffice is still in exactly the same state as it was when I wrote that post, if not worse. Yikes, fail.

Final category was SHARE: As you can likely tell from my massive blogging hiatus this year, I didn’t manage to do much of the sharing online. I did do my fair share of swaps and sending of happy post to my friends. I think I lost focus with the blog, and I didn’t really know what I wanted to achieve, I’m working to get back on top of things.

We can’t forget the obligatory reading challenge, that was a success. I’m very good at reading, it is my go to hobby when I need something to do. I always have a book on me, never leave home without one.

So, what did I do this year that is noteworthy? I was made a prefect over at IGGPPC in October, so I have done a lot of stuff for my favourite online community. I have even learned some new skills through this, like making graphics to make monthly challenges look a bit more exciting. I have a few more months left in this role, so I will continue to do all I can to make fun things for my iggles to do on a monthly basis.

I guess that we have been focusing quite a lot on the business this year as we grow and change. We have been running a lot more events this year, and getting our name out into the gaming community in general. We have run regional level events for multiple card games, and these have been incredibly successful. We do have some potentially very exciting news coming up for this business next year – so please keep your fingers crossed for this. I am hoping that it all works out, as the stress is really ramping up.

Looking back on this year it doesn’t really feel like I have achieved a great deal, my goals were very vague. I think I wrote them like that on purpose as the year before I picked specific things and when I didn’t achieve them it was a little disheartening, I think I will have to re-evaluate [again] how I choose the things that I want to do in the year.

I have had a couple of ideas already for some challenges that I want to set myself, but we shall see how they pan out.

How was your year? Did you achieve all of the things you aimed to?

2015 Goals

Goals… goals, goals, goals. Indeed.

It’s hard to think what I want to be doing with myself this year… Running a business takes up a lot of time and effort, and in the evening and at weekends [when we have them spare] I don’t really want to be pushing myself to be doing all that much.

The things that I came up with for this year fall into three main categories. Upgrade, Organise and Share.

The first category UPGRADE: what I mean by this, is finally getting around to all the things I’ve been meaning to do for yonks. It includes buying a pair of trainers to replace the Nikes I’ve had for 6 years, they have holes all over and I have a bad feeling that they will soon be able to talk back to me. I’m very picky with footwear, so it takes me a long time to let go of such a trusty pair. I will do it though. I deserve a treat. I also intend to replace some of the tired looking things for the house.

Next  we have ORGANISE: Lately I’ve been leaving things until the last minute to deal with. Or letting things mount up until it feels like too much of a job to deal with. My main goal in this category is to sort out my postcards from PostCrossing, I want to display them in such a way that they are nice to look at, and pleasing on the eye. There must be a better way than shoving them in a box. I also want to make the most of my cloffice space. There is a lot that needs to be done here … I need to get a boit creative with the space, as it is mainly a wardrobe room. We’ll get there.

Final category is SHARE: This covers a multitude of things. Part of this will be sharing with you guys, I want to talk more about my hobbies on the blog. Be this showing off swap goodies, writing about subscription boxes or crafty things that I’ve been getting up to. I want to tell you about it. So that is a thing I’ll be adding this year. I also want to do more happy mail projects this year, you know, spreading a little bit of love to the world in the form of trinkets and notes to people that make me smile, or that deserve a smile.

There is also the obligatory reading challenge, I’m sticking to the same format as last year for now. I plan to read 100 books again, if not more. I hope that I get there, but if I don’t at least I’m back reading again after a couple of months off books at the end of this year.

Last year I took on too many swaps and projects at the same time, so I plan to spread them out better this year. I don’t want to overcommit. I’m going to try to limit myself to two swaps a month. Princess Penpals is currently on the back burner, but I am hoping to get back on this and get my second letter out soon. If you don’t know what that is… then go and check it out here!

That’s all for now, I know that a lot of this isn’t groundbreaking, but these are what we have to work with. My constant attempts at healthy eating and being more active still toddle on in the background, I’m finding food a chore right now, and I dislike winter greatly, so these things will come back with time.

What are your goals for this year? Did you make any resolutions this year?

2014: Year in Review

Howdy folks

In the traditional fashion, it’s time to look back on what happened last year.

These were the goals that set for myself at the beginning of the year:

1. Stop buying books until you get through the backlog

1a. Only buy a new book when you’ve finished reading one

1b. Read lots *sigh*

2. Be more crafty

3. Complete Lego Marvel Superheroes to 100%

4. Bake more

5. 365 Day Photo Challenge

I was very successful in my reading lots goal, I read 103 books… you can see that on goodreads. I read widely in the YA fiction and fantasy areas of books. I also started reading graphic novels for the first time in July. This really does boost the numbers, as you can get through those bad boys really quickly.

Be more crafty… this is a pretty vague goal. I did complete a few craft projects, I made a felt Lumpy Space Princess, I made stationery for a swap, I have made things with Hama beads. I know that I could have done more, and there were lots of things that I had planned, but I commited to too many swaps last year, so my time was spread too thinly across too many projects.

Lego Marvel? I didn’t complete this one. In my 6 month update I had managed about 33% of the game, and since then I didn’t really play it that much more. I think I got to about 40% and not much more. I think this one was just too big, and a lot of the races were in the sky, so I was really struggling to complete them. I’m not sure if I’ll go back to this game, it’s unlikely. I am in a reading phase at the moment … so it could be worse.

I wonder why I picked baking as a goal for the year. I baked less this year than I have done in previous years. I baked courgette cake, and I made cupcakes for Halloween – that is the extent of that culinary endevour. I miss baking… but I’m not going to stress out about it.

The last goal was the Photo-A-Day challenge, which I surprised myself by completing. I got rather behind in the last few months of the year in uploading them on a regular schedule, but we got there in the end. It’ll be really cool to be able to look back on those photos and the memories that they have.

So, those weren’t the only things I did last year. I achieved things outside of those goals. And I’m even going to tell you about them.

I really got my iggle on this year, I took part in a tonne of swaps this year, from Christmas in July to stickers an Advent Calendar swap. Through these swaps I have made so many new friends, people that I talk to everyday [as well as writing].

I also did a moderate amount of postcard sending through postcrossing, this is something that I’m going to continue, and hopefully do more of this year… I love to travel the world through the postcards I get. [I’m going to do a post with my stats for the year from postcrossing]

As I said above, I started reading grapic novels. I started a collection too, I have acquired a great number of trade paperbacks this year. At the rate the collection is growing I’m going to have to get some new shelves sorted out!

I got a Ranger to level 80 in Guild Wars 2. I started playing in Novemver, and now my main character is top level, with pretty good gear. I’m not a massively serious player [honestly, even though I levelled fast]. I enjoy this game for how pretty it is, I could just log on and run around the map. I aimed to complete an area at a time, which was incredibly satisfying. My favourite part so far has been the Wintersday event, which has had an extra set of daily mission to do in a snow filled wonderland.

We had a substanstial amount of work done at the house, we had to have the roof replaced after storm damage last winter. This took a long time, and having the workmen in the vicinity was quite draining. We also got some prep done for other rooms in the house, but no other major projects were completed. We have some plans to get the book room sorted out soon, and fingers crossed we might get something else done this year too [no promises!]

I can’t neglect the fact that we had a busy year in Acme either. It is quite a challenge to run your own business, but we made it through another year [looking over the numbers on New Year’s Eve was such treat!]

I’m sure there were some other things that I was going to mention here too, but I think I’ve talked for long enough now.

What are you proud of achieving this year?

Posted on by 0 comment

This is a goal update, a bit like a 6-monthly check in to see that I’ve been getting on ok. And as far as reading is concerned, I have been incredibly successful for the most part.

I have surpassed my Goodreads Reading Goal of 40 books. I’m currently at 50, but I am quite close to the end of the book I’m currently reading. I have an idea of how it snuck up on me, I’ve read a wide variety of materials including graphic novels, comics, and a manga [my first one ever]. New Page: Goals for 2014

Posted on by 0 comment

I’m not normally one to make new years resolutions, but I made a lot of goals this January. I decided I wanted to do a whole lot of things, and in a very clever fashion, I don’t know what happened to the list. So, the new page of goals, is the start of a list. It’s some of the things I remembered that I wanted to do, with some other things added in for good measure.

I’m hoping that having the list on the blog will mean that I see them every time I write a post, and I will be able to stick to them easier.

1. Stop buying books until you get through the backlog I managed to make it part way through January before I bought a new book

1a. Only buy a new book when you’ve finished reading one I bought 5 paperbacks on a mini shopping trip with my mother in the middle of February… so the replacing a book I’ve finished with a new book is also failed.

1b. Read lots *sigh* I aim to read at least 30 books as part of my GoodReads challenge this year, including comics and graphic novels, I’m currently at 13 books. Which is kind of awesome. I may even have to up the count and make my challenge number closer to 40. We shall see how that goes. Last year I upped it too high too fast, so I failed and felt like I was under too much pressure to read as fast as I could, so this year I’m aiming for a more gentle incline.

2. Be more crafty I enjoy making things, and I want to do more of it this year. So far I have completed 5 projects:

Valentines cards for IGGPPC card swap

Cat hat mark 1

Paper hearts for Iggle Craft Challenge February

Cat hat mark 2

Blue hat for my mother

3. Complete Lego Marvel Superheroes to 100% So far I have finished the story mode, which is normally only 30% of the game, I stalled somewhat after that, but am hoping to get back into it soon.

4. Bake more I love baked goods, and I haven’t baked a single thing for months. I made marzipan cookies in December last year, and I’ve been meaning to make more of them ever since.

5. Keep up with the blog Since I started at the end of January, I have manage to post at least once a week. I even managed to prep a dozen posts to appear whilst I had a ton of visitors and not enough time to maintain the blog. I was really pleased that I managed to schedule so much stuff… I’m coming to the end of that little stash, so I need to get back onto the horse and start writing again. I have a few reviews to finish up for books I’ve finished… and I really need to get another board game post done. Priorities girl.

6. 365 Day Photo Challenge I started this challenge late, so throughout February I was taking extra photos to fill the days I had missed. At the time I’m writing I have done 63 days of this challenge. Most of the time I have not stuck to the prompts, but they do factor into my equation. I like having the prompts as a back up structure if I have no spontaneous photos taken that day.

I’ll probably be adding more goals to this list as we go through the year and more things hit my radar. And I will try to do update posts when there have been any major events in this list.

Do you have any goals for the year? Did you make new years resolutions? Are you sticking to them?
