A Year In Review: 2015

So, I just re-read my ‘Goals post’ for the start of this year, what an eye opener… if you want to read that post in full, you can find it here.

I chose three main categories to focus on this year: Upgrade, Organise and Share. Just looking back on that it seems incredibly vague…

The first category UPGRADE: I specifically mentioned new trainers here. I did that, so that is one job off the list. We did buy some new bookshelves this year, but I wasn’t replacing any old ones, we are just short of shelves / have too many books.

Next we had ORGANISE: I still leave things to the last minute, that hasn’t changed. Although I have been keeping on top of things like groceries and appointments and the like. I bought a different box for my Postcrossing cards to live in, it’s prettier than the last box they were housed in. My cloffice is still in exactly the same state as it was when I wrote that post, if not worse. Yikes, fail.

Final category was SHARE: As you can likely tell from my massive blogging hiatus this year, I didn’t manage to do much of the sharing online. I did do my fair share of swaps and sending of happy post to my friends. I think I lost focus with the blog, and I didn’t really know what I wanted to achieve, I’m working to get back on top of things.

We can’t forget the obligatory reading challenge, that was a success. I’m very good at reading, it is my go to hobby when I need something to do. I always have a book on me, never leave home without one.

So, what did I do this year that is noteworthy? I was made a prefect over at IGGPPC in October, so I have done a lot of stuff for my favourite online community. I have even learned some new skills through this, like making graphics to make monthly challenges look a bit more exciting. I have a few more months left in this role, so I will continue to do all I can to make fun things for my iggles to do on a monthly basis.

I guess that we have been focusing quite a lot on the business this year as we grow and change. We have been running a lot more events this year, and getting our name out into the gaming community in general. We have run regional level events for multiple card games, and these have been incredibly successful. We do have some potentially very exciting news coming up for this business next year – so please keep your fingers crossed for this. I am hoping that it all works out, as the stress is really ramping up.

Looking back on this year it doesn’t really feel like I have achieved a great deal, my goals were very vague. I think I wrote them like that on purpose as the year before I picked specific things and when I didn’t achieve them it was a little disheartening, I think I will have to re-evaluate [again] how I choose the things that I want to do in the year.

I have had a couple of ideas already for some challenges that I want to set myself, but we shall see how they pan out.

How was your year? Did you achieve all of the things you aimed to?

2015 Goals

Goals… goals, goals, goals. Indeed.

It’s hard to think what I want to be doing with myself this year… Running a business takes up a lot of time and effort, and in the evening and at weekends [when we have them spare] I don’t really want to be pushing myself to be doing all that much.

The things that I came up with for this year fall into three main categories. Upgrade, Organise and Share.

The first category UPGRADE: what I mean by this, is finally getting around to all the things I’ve been meaning to do for yonks. It includes buying a pair of trainers to replace the Nikes I’ve had for 6 years, they have holes all over and I have a bad feeling that they will soon be able to talk back to me. I’m very picky with footwear, so it takes me a long time to let go of such a trusty pair. I will do it though. I deserve a treat. I also intend to replace some of the tired looking things for the house.

Next  we have ORGANISE: Lately I’ve been leaving things until the last minute to deal with. Or letting things mount up until it feels like too much of a job to deal with. My main goal in this category is to sort out my postcards from PostCrossing, I want to display them in such a way that they are nice to look at, and pleasing on the eye. There must be a better way than shoving them in a box. I also want to make the most of my cloffice space. There is a lot that needs to be done here … I need to get a boit creative with the space, as it is mainly a wardrobe room. We’ll get there.

Final category is SHARE: This covers a multitude of things. Part of this will be sharing with you guys, I want to talk more about my hobbies on the blog. Be this showing off swap goodies, writing about subscription boxes or crafty things that I’ve been getting up to. I want to tell you about it. So that is a thing I’ll be adding this year. I also want to do more happy mail projects this year, you know, spreading a little bit of love to the world in the form of trinkets and notes to people that make me smile, or that deserve a smile.

There is also the obligatory reading challenge, I’m sticking to the same format as last year for now. I plan to read 100 books again, if not more. I hope that I get there, but if I don’t at least I’m back reading again after a couple of months off books at the end of this year.

Last year I took on too many swaps and projects at the same time, so I plan to spread them out better this year. I don’t want to overcommit. I’m going to try to limit myself to two swaps a month. Princess Penpals is currently on the back burner, but I am hoping to get back on this and get my second letter out soon. If you don’t know what that is… then go and check it out here!

That’s all for now, I know that a lot of this isn’t groundbreaking, but these are what we have to work with. My constant attempts at healthy eating and being more active still toddle on in the background, I’m finding food a chore right now, and I dislike winter greatly, so these things will come back with time.

What are your goals for this year? Did you make any resolutions this year?

New Page: Goals for 2014

Posted on by 0 comment

I’m not normally one to make new years resolutions, but I made a lot of goals this January. I decided I wanted to do a whole lot of things, and in a very clever fashion, I don’t know what happened to the list. So, the new page of goals, is the start of a list. It’s some of the things I remembered that I wanted to do, with some other things added in for good measure.

I’m hoping that having the list on the blog will mean that I see them every time I write a post, and I will be able to stick to them easier.

1. Stop buying books until you get through the backlog I managed to make it part way through January before I bought a new book

1a. Only buy a new book when you’ve finished reading one I bought 5 paperbacks on a mini shopping trip with my mother in the middle of February… so the replacing a book I’ve finished with a new book is also failed.

1b. Read lots *sigh* I aim to read at least 30 books as part of my GoodReads challenge this year, including comics and graphic novels, I’m currently at 13 books. Which is kind of awesome. I may even have to up the count and make my challenge number closer to 40. We shall see how that goes. Last year I upped it too high too fast, so I failed and felt like I was under too much pressure to read as fast as I could, so this year I’m aiming for a more gentle incline.

2. Be more crafty I enjoy making things, and I want to do more of it this year. So far I have completed 5 projects:

Valentines cards for IGGPPC card swap

Cat hat mark 1

Paper hearts for Iggle Craft Challenge February

Cat hat mark 2

Blue hat for my mother

3. Complete Lego Marvel Superheroes to 100% So far I have finished the story mode, which is normally only 30% of the game, I stalled somewhat after that, but am hoping to get back into it soon.

4. Bake more I love baked goods, and I haven’t baked a single thing for months. I made marzipan cookies in December last year, and I’ve been meaning to make more of them ever since.

5. Keep up with the blog Since I started at the end of January, I have manage to post at least once a week. I even managed to prep a dozen posts to appear whilst I had a ton of visitors and not enough time to maintain the blog. I was really pleased that I managed to schedule so much stuff… I’m coming to the end of that little stash, so I need to get back onto the horse and start writing again. I have a few reviews to finish up for books I’ve finished… and I really need to get another board game post done. Priorities girl.

6. 365 Day Photo Challenge I started this challenge late, so throughout February I was taking extra photos to fill the days I had missed. At the time I’m writing I have done 63 days of this challenge. Most of the time I have not stuck to the prompts, but they do factor into my equation. I like having the prompts as a back up structure if I have no spontaneous photos taken that day.

I’ll probably be adding more goals to this list as we go through the year and more things hit my radar. And I will try to do update posts when there have been any major events in this list.

Do you have any goals for the year? Did you make new years resolutions? Are you sticking to them?

Cat Ears on a Hat

Just a quick little update on my crafty projects, I had some serious speedy crochet going on over the last two nights, and I managed to make the cat ear beanie that I mentioned in my last project post.

Me in my new hat

So there we have it. The pattern was super easy to follow for the basic beanie. In just over an hour I managed to make the basic hat. I didn’t want the hat to be too tight, so I did the extra increase, but I really didn’t need it. The hat is comfortable and quite loose, but I could cope with it being a little more snug.

I had to learn how to do front post and back post double crochet to make the ribbing at the bottom, but YouTube is your friend. I found a really good video that showed the stitches in slow motion. It was super helpful.

I found the ears a lot harder, small pieces always make my fingers and brain hurt. I adapted it slightly so the increases happened faster, and there were several rounds of the same size… but I think they came out really well.

Positioning the ears was a bit of a nightmare, this took several attempts to get them in just the right place, but very easy to achieve once I was happy with where they’d been pinned.

Now I want to make a whole batch of these in lots of different colours, so I can be any kind of cat that I want to be. I wonder how I’ll find ginger kitty wool… but that is something for another day.

Works in Progress

I am very good at planning things. I think for the most part it’s because I like to plan for every eventuality. I’m a notorious list writer, going on holiday anywhere near me makes me pack and repack half a dozen times.

In the last few years I have planned and started so many projects, some I even started… but there are very few that I have actually finished.

For example, the blanket I planned 3 years ago, to use up some of the balance in my paypal account [best reason to start a craft project I know!]. It’s taken me 3 years of on and off work to get to the stage I am at.

Granny Squares for days

Granny Squares for days

Over the last 3 years I had to redo some of the squares as I got better and my stitches got tighter. 140 squares. I had a real kick in July when I had a sudden burst of enthusiasm for crafty projects and churned out the squares by the bucket load.

This is the eventual plan...

This is the eventual plan…

Now I’ve frozen again. I have to block each square individually to fix the tiny inconsistencies in size, then starts the final step of fixing them all together. This feels like a monumental task to complete – and it has taken such a long time to get here.

I’m hoping to get it finished whilst its still cold enough to need blankets, but it’s not the end of the world if it takes me a little longer than that to finish.

I have other crochet projects too.

I bought some wool just this morning to make this cat hat

Soft black wool

Soft black wool

This one I need to make a start on as soon as possible. Otherwise I won’t be able to wear it until the end of the year. It’s cold now, and I need a cute hat to make myself feel warm and toasty [and even more adorkable than ever]. I might even make two, another one in ginger to match my cats.

I got a really cute arigurumi crochet kit from Summer as my Secret Santa

I’ve never made stuffed animals before, but it’s something that I’ve wanted to try for a while now. The kit makes a fish and a beaver – such an odd combination, but cute. There are some really sweet looking critters in this book that I want to make too, so hopefully I get off my butt and do them.

It wasn’t the only crochet toy book that I got this year. Another friend got me a book

photo 5

These have some of the most adorable little toys in, from birthday presents to Rudolf. With lots of ideas for all kinds of different celebrations. These little projects might help me get through the backlog of wool I have going on!

I have none craft projects too. This month I am organising a sticker swap with the International Geek Girl Pen Pal Club. I’m really enjoying this one, a handful of people have signed up already, and it’s only been live for a day or so.

Yay, stickers!

Yay, stickers!

I can’t wait to send my goodies out and see what I get back. I found it so hard to find cute stickers lately, and I’ve had some really cool ones in letters and stuff from my friends and pen pals. Organising this swap has made a million other ideas go through my brain. [Anyone for a cat lady swap or a hobby swap?]

I think I need to slow down a bit, finish one thing at a time. I’ll try to do some updates as I go with projects – especially the cat ear hat. It just looks so cute!

Who am I kidding? I’m off to look for paper craft ideas, and fingerless glove patterns, and snood or scarf patterns. The winter makes me want to bundle up with warm things, and the weather has been particularly bleak this February.
